The expanding reach of Japanese encephalitis |

| Japanese encephalitis (JE) has largely been regarded as a virus affecting Asia and the western Pacific, with a seasonal pattern over summer months in temperate areas and rainy season in the tropics and subtropics. However, climate change, novel host species (e.g., ticks, domestic cattle and sheep, pangolins, meerkats), changing bird migration patterns, and other factors appear to be contributing to a more dynamic picture of this virus.
Geographic regions impacted may be expanding, with one local human case confirmed in Angola (the first case in Africa) in 2016 and 46 human cases and 7 deaths in Australia from an outbreak spanning 2022-2023.2-3 While the source of infection and its transmission... |
