Abstract
The Zika virus (ZIKV) is an arbovirus that has been associated with small outbreaks in several countries over the past decades. In 2015, ZIKV caused an important outbreak in Brazil that resulted in serious neurological complications, such as Guillain-Barré syndrome and microcephaly in newborns. Proteomics approaches have significantly contributed to understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying ZIKV infection and pathogenesis. This review compiles these studies that explore proteomics methodologies, as well as the main host models, and ZIKV strains, shedding light on crucial aspects of viral infection. The identification of potential biomarkers, metabolic pathways, and molecular processes associated with infection and associated diseases, as well as potential therapeutic targets, are discussed in this article, demonstrating the ongoing potential of proteomics to bridge critical gaps in the molecular understanding of ZIKV infection.
Keywords: ZIKV, Zika virus, virus, proteomics, protein.
